Electrical Regulations in the home

PME Electrical | May 18th, 2011 | No Comments »
You are probably aware that electricians have to adhere to many regulations when installing electrical appliances within a household. The introduction of Part P of the Building regulations means they need to be more skilled than ever before to work in a home.As long as an electrician knew what they were doing technically in the home and complied with BS761 regulations then it used to be that was all that was needed to carry out electrical work in the home.

However, now Part P of the Building Regulations has been introduced it means that even in a domestic home most electrical jobs that need to be carried out should be undertaken by a qualified electrician. To check your electrician is fully qualified, they should be able to produce the relevant documents and certificates issued by the local authority in charge or planning and building.

Now electricians need to be aware of the following building regulations; Approved Documents Parts A, B, C, E, F, L, M and P of the Building Regulations.

The reason these additional regulations have been brought out is to protect you as the consumer. PME Electrical are electricians in London and use only qualified electricians and comply with the strictest regulations. PME Electrical can advise you on all of your electrical needs.

Dimmer Switch Danger

If you know the basics about domestic electricity then installing a dimmer switch is quite easy. All you do is turn off the electricity supply to your home at the fuse box, remove the light switch you want to replace and simply install the dimmer switch instead. In most cases this just involves connecting two wires to the dimmer switch. But did you know that if what surrounds your dimmer switch if flammable then your house could go up in flames! Installing a dimmer switch is not always as easy as it appears.

As any qualified electrician in London will tell you, the switch works by altering the current going through the light switch up to 120 times per second. Then when the switch is dimmed, the light never reaches full brightness as the electricity is cut off before reaching its full output. Turning the electricity on and off at this speed will generate a fair amount of heat in the wires and if this is exposed to a flammable material then this could very easily ignite.

PME Electrical are qualified electricians in London, call and find out how to safely install a dimmer switch.
